The day began at Hotel Hashem, a local favorite known for its traditional breakfast. A spread of delicious dishes soon arrived, including refreshing orange juice, hot coffee, crispy falafel, and a savory omelet. The falafels, a regional specialty, truly lived up to expectations.
This hearty meal, costing just 6 Jordanian Dinars (approximately 8 US dollars), offered incredible value, especially with the fresh, unparalleled juice. Fuelled and ready, the city beckoned.

Aqaba’s city center buzzes with life. A walk through its local market reveals a myriad of shops, from mobile phone stores to clothing boutiques, restaurants, and souvenir stalls catering to every traveler’s need. The energy is palpable, even in the morning.
A practical stop at an Orange outlet was essential to secure a local SIM card. Connectivity remains vital for any traveler. A 40 GB data package for one month cost 13.2 JD, roughly 20 US dollars. While pricier than some regions, it offered a stark contrast to the higher costs of unlimited plans back in Saudi Arabia.

Returning to the city center, some shops observed a brief siesta from 3 to 5 pm. However, cafes and restaurants remained open, offering a perfect opportunity for a break. A traditional Arabic cafe, similar to those found throughout the Arab world, provided a glimpse into local culture. These spots are hubs for socializing, often with people enjoying huqa (shisha).
While savoring a cappuccino, the fascinating history of Aqaba came to light. This area was once part of Saudi Arabia but was exchanged with Jordan for a piece of desert. This strategic move gave Jordan its vital port access to the Red Sea. Two cups of coffee cost 2 JD (around 3 US dollars), a reasonable price compared to neighboring countries.
A Quick Look at Aqaba’s Castle and Mosque
As the city gradually reawakened from its afternoon lull, the next stop was an old castle by the beach. Though small and typically closed, it offered a historical backdrop to the bustling port city. However, this venture led to an impromptu escort by the police. Initially, a brief check of equipment found nothing amiss.
Yet, a second encounter led to a three-hour stay at the police station. An extensive session of questioning ensued, with the boat operator also present. Without delving into sensitive international details, proximity to the maritime border and filming in such an area in this region can sometimes lead to complications. It was a stark reminder of the unique geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, where travel plans can sometimes diverge from expectations.

After a long and eventful day, dinner at Al-Shami, a renowned traditional Jordanian restaurant in Aqaba, was a welcome reprieve. The highlight was Mansaf, the national dish of Jordan. This unique rice-based dish featured white rice layered with a thin bread, topped with almonds, cucumber, and coriander. It was served alongside succulent lamb and a distinctive yogurt curry.
