Aqaba Adventures: From Red Sea Dives to Unexpected Border Encounters in Jordan
Arriving in Aqaba after an exciting cross-border journey from Saudi Arabia, a new adventure began. This vibrant port city, Jordan’s only coastal access, immediately captured the imagination. It sits uniquely at the northern tip of the Red Sea, a fascinating crossroads where four different cities meet. From Aqaba, you can glimpse Haql in Saudi Arabia, Eilat across the water, and even Taba in Egypt just a little further along the coast. It is a true melting pot of cultures and landscapes.
WildLens by Abrar set out to explore this dynamic city, experiencing everything from traditional meals to the depths of the Red Sea, and even an unexpected encounter that spiced up the day.
A Taste of Aqaba: Traditional Jordanian Breakfast
The day began at Hotel Hashem, a local favorite known for its traditional breakfast. A spread of delicious dishes soon arrived, including refreshing orange juice, hot coffee, crispy falafel, and a savory omelet. The falafels, a regional specialty, truly lived up to expectations.
This hearty meal, costing just 6 Jordanian Dinars (approximately 8 US dollars), offered incredible value, especially with the fresh, unparalleled juice. Fuelled and ready, the city beckoned.
Exploring Aqaba’s Vibrant Heart
Aqaba’s city center buzzes with life. A walk through its local market reveals a myriad of shops, from mobile phone stores to clothing boutiques, restaurants, and souvenir stalls catering to every traveler’s need. The energy is palpable, even in the morning.
A practical stop at an Orange outlet was essential to secure a local SIM card. Connectivity remains vital for any traveler. A 40 GB data package for one month cost 13.2 JD, roughly 20 US dollars. While pricier than some regions, it offered a stark contrast to the higher costs of unlimited plans back in Saudi Arabia.
South Beach Serenity and Red Sea Thrills
Coastal Ride and Aqaba’s Atmosphere
The journey continued south, towards Aqaba’s stunning beaches. A strong wind, a characteristic of the area for several days, swept through the city, making the motorcycle ride a thrilling experience. Unlike the midday closures common in Saudi Arabia, Aqaba maintains its lively spirit throughout the day. Shops may close around 8 pm, but restaurants and tourist spots stay open, creating a vibrant evening ambiance.
The coastal road offered breathtaking views of the Red Sea. The beaches, though not overly crowded, provided a peaceful escape. A cool breeze often keeps the temperatures pleasant, though the wind can turn warmer after 2 pm, prompting locals to rest.
My First Scuba Dive in the Red Sea
Originally planning to snorkel, the strong winds led to an even more exciting opportunity: scuba diving. For Abrar, this was a first, an entirely new experience. Under the guidance of an instructor named Yahya, the initial apprehension gave way to wonder.
Donning the gear and taking that first breath underwater at 10 meters deep was transformative. The Red Sea revealed a world of unparalleled beauty. While a slight ear discomfort was a minor challenge, the overall experience was profoundly enjoyable. The sensation of weightlessness and the mesmerizing underwater panorama made it an unforgettable moment.
Afternoon Delights and Historical Glimpses
Relaxing in a Traditional Aqaba Cafe
Returning to the city center, some shops observed a brief siesta from 3 to 5 pm. However, cafes and restaurants remained open, offering a perfect opportunity for a break. A traditional Arabic cafe, similar to those found throughout the Arab world, provided a glimpse into local culture. These spots are hubs for socializing, often with people enjoying huqa (shisha).
While savoring a cappuccino, the fascinating history of Aqaba came to light. This area was once part of Saudi Arabia but was exchanged with Jordan for a piece of desert. This strategic move gave Jordan its vital port access to the Red Sea. Two cups of coffee cost 2 JD (around 3 US dollars), a reasonable price compared to neighboring countries.
A Quick Look at Aqaba’s Castle and Mosque
As the city gradually reawakened from its afternoon lull, the next stop was an old castle by the beach. Though small and typically closed, it offered a historical backdrop to the bustling port city. Nearby stood a beautiful mosque, its architecture a striking contrast to the modern cityscape. Aqaba, being primarily a beach and port city, focuses its activities around these natural assets rather than numerous historical sites, despite its ancient roots.
An Unexpected Turn: Border Encounters
The day took an unexpected turn while exploring the sea by speedboat. With Eilat, an Israeli city, visible across the water, the traveler aimed to capture the unique border dynamics from the sea. However, this venture led to an impromptu escort by the police. Initially, a brief check of equipment found nothing amiss.
Yet, a second encounter led to a three-hour stay at the police station. An extensive session of questioning ensued, with the boat operator also present. Without delving into sensitive international details, proximity to the maritime border and filming in such an area in this region can sometimes lead to complications. It was a stark reminder of the unique geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, where travel plans can sometimes diverge from expectations.
Savoring Jordanian Flavors: Dinner at Al-Shami
After a long and eventful day, dinner at Al-Shami, a renowned traditional Jordanian restaurant in Aqaba, was a welcome reprieve. The highlight was Mansaf, the national dish of Jordan. This unique rice-based dish featured white rice layered with a thin bread, topped with almonds, cucumber, and coriander. It was served alongside succulent lamb and a distinctive yogurt curry.
The taste of Mansaf proved truly unique, distinct from other Arabian rice dishes like Mandi. The tender lamb, combined with the creamy yogurt sauce, created a truly memorable culinary experience, providing a comforting end to an eventful day.
Aqaba offers a journey of diverse experiences, from the refreshing waters of the Red Sea and its culinary delights to the intriguing complexities of regional travel. Every moment, even the unexpected ones, adds another layer to the rich tapestry of a Jordanian adventure.
